Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has officially announced that his wife, Mehtab Chandee, will be the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate for the upcoming by-elections in Gambegre in Tura.

The decision, which has been eagerly anticipated, was revealed during a public gathering in Gambegre. Sangma emphasized that the choice to field his wife as a candidate was driven by overwhelming public demand within the constituency.

During his speech, CM Sangma highlighted the importance of the Gambegre constituency, noting that if the electorate chooses his wife, they will gain direct access to the chief minister’s office.

This, he argued, would ensure more responsive and efficient governance, particularly in addressing local developmental challenges. Sangma reiterated his commitment to accelerating the region’s progress, assuring that the NPP would work relentlessly to fulfill the aspirations of the people in Gambegre.

The Gambegre by-election has garnered attention, as it is seen as a crucial contest that could influence the political landscape in Meghalaya.

The NPP’s focus on development, coupled with the personal involvement of the chief minister, signals the party’s determination to secure the seat.

Notably, in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the ruling NPP lost the prestigious Tura constituency while Shillong constituency was won by regional party Voice of the Peoples Party.

On the other side, the Congress party, which has historically held sway in the region, is also preparing to mount a formidable challenge.

Vincent H. Pala, the president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, has expressed confidence in the party’s prospects. He mentioned that seasoned leaders like Saleng A. Sangma and Deborah C. Marak are mobilizing support to ensure a strong performance in the by-elections.

While the Congress has not yet announced its final candidate, Pala hinted that the party is strategically planning its next move. The stakes are high, and the Congress is keen on retaining the Gambegre seat, which has been a significant bastion for the party.
